Contest Time with Spurgeon

by | Contests | 13 comments

UPDATE: Contest winners are Linda T, Tammy, Rhonda England, and Latayne Scott. Thanks so much for your responses — I wish I could have given you all prizes!

For this contest I would like you to tell me what this phrase of Spurgeon’s means to you — Omnipotence has servants everywhere. Make your comments here on this post. You can be anonymous if you like (make sure you leave your email address — it won’t show on-line), and if someone else makes a similar comment, that’s OK, just put yours here, too.

I’ll pick four winners and each winner can pick three books from this list. I’ll pick the winners on Wednesday probably.

C.H. Spurgeon – Morning and Evening

“We know that all things work together for good to them that love God.” Romans 8:28

Upon some points a believer is absolutely sure. He knows, for instance, that God sits in the stern-sheets of the vessel when it rocks most. He believes that an invisible hand is always on the world’s tiller, and that wherever providence may drift, Jehovah steers it. That re-assuring knowledge prepares him for everything. He looks over the raging waters and sees the spirit of Jesus treading the billows, and he hears a voice saying, “It is I, be not afraid.” He knows too that God is always wise, and, knowing this, he is confident that there can be no accidents, no mistakes; that nothing can occur which ought not to arise. He can say, “If I should lose all I have, it is better that I should lose than have, if God so wills: the worst calamity is the wisest and the kindest thing that could befall to me if God ordains it.” “We know that all things work together for good to them that love God.” The Christian does not merely hold this as a theory, but he knows it as a matter of fact. Everything has worked for good as yet; the poisonous drugs mixed in fit proportions have worked the cure; the sharp cuts of the lancet have cleansed out the proud flesh and facilitated the healing. Every event as yet has worked out the most divinely blessed results; and so, believing that God rules all, that he governs wisely, that he brings good out of evil, the believer’s heart is assured, and he is enabled calmly to meet each trial as it comes. The believer can in the spirit of true resignation pray, “Send me what thou wilt, my God, so long as it comes from thee; never came there an ill portion from thy table to any of thy children.”

Say not my soul, ‘From whence can God relieve my care?’
Remember that Omnipotence has servants everywhere.
His method is sublime, his heart profoundly kind,
God never is before his time, and never is behind.

What a wonderful and truthful sentiment! I think it means all powerful God has servants to do His will everywhere. His servants are all men, all creation. He can use what He wills to accomplish His will. As self-serving as we think we are, we are all still under Him and His authority- lost and redeemed alike!

He can and will use every situation to bring about our good. Once in awhile I am tempted to say if only this had happened, maybe I would have become a Christian sooner, or other types of like thought. It is then I am reminded that God is Sovereign and His timing is perfect and right. He knows the reasons we may never know, but we trust in Him. Also, I am learning that no matter how unqualified we may feel we are, we can be used by Him. I pray that I learn to be open to the Holy Spirits leading this year!

God has all power to use each of us and anything else He needs to use, to go everywhere He needs us to go, to do what He needs us to do to reach all of the people for Him.

While serving the one and only omnipotent God, it gives me great peace to know that He is 100% in control and that nothing happens without his consent and decree and that all is ultimately for his people’s benefit.

Thanks for sharing this encouraging message. I read Spurgeon several times a week and am always blessed and inspired. God has no plan B, only a plan A. We can trust a sovereign God who walks before, beside, and behind us every moment, giving us grace and mercy as His perfect plan unfolds.

Sounding the depths and breadth of God’s sovereignty is a lifetime endeavor; I don’t think we’ll every fully apprehend it this side of heaven. His servants, which are everywhere, include not only circumstances (events) but timing as well. “In the fullness of time” is one of His servants as well as His power to turn what may be intended for evil to the good outworking of His plan for redeeming His people.

Since God is everywhere at all times and is not bound by time and space, I believe He is working in our past, our present, and our future all at the same time. We can’t see all of this and our finite minds can’t really grasp it, but God has put(the past), is putting(the present) and will put(future) people and even circumstances in our lives so that all things are working for our good.

God has His servants in every place who cooperate with Him in carrying out His purposes. Each time I witness God’s power displayed in them, His omnipotence is focused squarely in my line of vision. He doesn’t NEED to use people but He chooses to….amazing.

We as His servants are under the hand of an all powerful God doing His will at His pleasure.

Might I add also that God has vessels for honor and vessels for dishonor (paraphrase of 2Tim 2:20-21). In His omnipotence we are all His servants in one way or the other.

I love your American Gothic picture!!! I love how Spurgeon was called “The Governor” and think he was an amazing preacher. I actually heard someone preach long ago who knew him personally.
