Paul Washer Quotes

If you have other Paul Washer quotes, please post them in the comments.

Please note: I’m not posting these to make Paul Washer out to be some kind of god — this is just for informational purposes — information you can use to help others. L.B.

The person who loves you most will tell you the most truth. One of the greatest distinguishing marks of a false prophet is that he will always tell you what you want to hear, he will never rain on your parade, he will get you clapping, he will get you jumping, he will make you dizzy, he will keep you entertained, and he will present a Christianity to you that will make your church look like a Six Flags over Jesus. And keep you so entertained you are never addressed with great issues such as these:

Is God working in my life?
Am I growing in holiness?
Have I truly been born again?

In modern day evangelism, this precious doctrine [of regeneration] has been reduced to nothing more than a human decision to raise one’s hand, walk an aisle, or pray a “sinner’s prayer.” As a result, the majority of Americans believe that they’ve been “born again” (i.e., regenerated) even though their thoughts, words, and deeds are a continual contradiction to the nature and will of God.

Here stands God on the day of creation. He looks at stars and He says all you stars move yourself to this place and start in this order and move in a circle and move exactly as I tell you, until I give you another word. Planets-pick yourself up and whirl, make this formation at my command, until I give you another word. He looks at mountains and says be lifted up and they obey him. He tells valleys be cast down and they obey him. He looks at the sea and says you will come this far, and the sea obeys. Then, he looks at you and says come and you go no! Does that bother anyone?

People tell me judge not lest ye be judged. I always tell them, twist not scripture lest ye be like Satan.
————-
The work is hindered. The glory of God is tarnished and it is because the people of God no longer know how to discern the things of God.
—————
Ever wonder how the people of God could walk into the temple of God, could offer sacrifices to God could praise God, and then turn right around and find the biggest tree on the highest hill and worship any number of idols, and not be able to tell the difference, and not be able to recognize the wrong, in a multiplicity of gods? Well, I want you to know that is the church in America today. And because the greatest sin among the men of God today is the fear of men which is a snare, and the fear losing economic security and reputation in the denomination. As the church runs headlong into judgment today the men of God instead of repenting and crying out and studying God’s word with all their passion are looking for models on how to keep lost people in their congregations and it’s wrong.

(As American Christians) We have forgotten how to blush.

Most of you live your life on flimsy little songs, not upon the word of God.
——————
We honor the old prophets, we honor the Tozer’s and Spurgen’s but we don’t want to pay the price they payed, and they payed the price by being men who walked alone who lived with God and who loved His word.
————–
What’s the will of God for my life? You don’t need to know the will of God in your life, you need to know the God of your life!
————
How could we have such a low view of the gospel of Jesus Christ that we have to manipulate men psychologically to get them to come down and pray a prayer? …How many times have I heard evangelists say, “It’ll only take five minutes.“? No my dear friend, it will take your life — all of it! “We’re just trying to attract people and then we’ll gradually bring them in further and further.” That is what the cults do, that’s not what Jesus did. Notice that in the gospels every time a great crowd is following Jesus, he turns around and says something so radical to them that most of them walk away. Of course Jesus probably would not get invited to teach evangelism [in most churches today].”

I don’t know why you’re clapping; I’m talking about you.
————
Well, I was out here on the highway, and I was driving and I had a flat tire and I got out to change the tire, and when I was changing the tire, the lug nut fell off, and I wasn’t paying attention that I was on the middle of the highway, I stood up and there was a 30-ton logging truck going 120 miles an hour about ten yards in front of me, and it ran me over and that’s why I’m late.

Now, there would only be two…I know no one studies logic anymore, but there would only be two logical conclusions. One, I’m a liar or two, I’m a madman. You would say, “Brother Paul, it’s absolutely absurd. It is impossible, Brother Paul, to have an encounter with something as large as a logging truck and not be changed.”

And then my question would be to you — What is larger? A logging truck or God? How is it that so many people today profess to have had an encounter with Jesus Christ, and yet, they are not permanently changed?
————–
You say, “The most important thing on the face of the earth is to know Jesus Christ.” That is not true. The most important thing on the face of the earth is that Jesus Christ knows you! Do you know Jesus? Does Jesus know you?
———-
Jesus is all we need! (man)
Young man, Jesus is all we have. Outside of Christ, you have nothing to do with God. And God has nothing to do with you, except judgment. (Paul)
————-
If you’re a Christian, you’re not a Christian because when Jesus Christ was on that cross – the Romans and Jews beat Him up. If you’re a Christian – your sins are paid for, because when He was on that tree, He bore the sins of His people. And God, His own Father, crushed Him under the full force of His wrath – all the wrath that should have been poured out on you; God crushed His only begotten Son in your place.
—————
…and you say you’re bold, Christian, cause you wear a Christian T-shirt!
————–
Many of the things that you love to do, God hates. Did you know that?
—————
The greatest heresy in the American evangelical and protestant church is that if you pray and “ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart,” He will definitely come in.
—————
A little boy… Andrew Meimann… the Muslim shot him five times through the stomach and left him on a sidewalk simply because he cried out, ‘I am so afraid but I cannot deny Jesus Christ. Please don’t kill me but I will not deny Him!’ And he died in a pool of blood. And you talk about being a radical Christian because you wear a t-shirt… because you go to a conference! I’m talking about holiness! I’m talking about godliness!
————–
The question is not whether you would like to pray this prayer and ask Jesus to come into your heart — after all, you know, the handle to your heart is on the inside and if you do not open it Jesus cannot come in. My friend, Jesus is Lord of your heart and if He wants to come in, He will kick the door down.

Oh, this movie only has a bit of cussing and it only has a bit of nudity…how much sin does it take to grieve the Holy Spirit?

He can’t fill up your cup with himself, if your cup is already full of the world!

    Thanks for posting these.
I know many have raved about his preaching.
I do see a place for it of course!
But a little too much ‘yelling’ for me.
    But these quotes are good.
Can you recommend a favorite sermon where he does not yell quite so much?
Or perhaps a nice quiet book I can read instead?
    Thanks!

To give a riveting sermon, one does not need to thumb one’s fist and yell like Paul Washer. I have heard spirit-filled preachers who gave powerful sermons without yelling but then each has his/her own style. Personally, i find it very off putting.

Personally I find it equally silly to be offended with yelling…and to be offended with the one offended with yelling. Is there a place for severity…yes Jesus was – “otherwise that would make me a liar like you”, to a man that none of us would blame for wanting to bury his own father “follow me and let the dead bury their own dead” and when He cleansed the temple. Is there a place for sensitivity and discerning gentleness… absolutely – “learn from Me for I am humble and gentle of heart” and “a bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out”. My suggestion let us make it not about the delivery or the lack of delivery….rather let us make it about whether Christ was lifted up and Father was honored and the Holy Spirit given the preeminence He deserves. Anything else is foolish arguementation that the devil is thrilled to use to distract us from the Lamb of God having the reward of His suffering … our entire hearts…. our sin …our God given righteousness… our successes and failures our celebration and our woes… everything that is shame… and everything that is Him lifting our heads…. He is worthy of it all…. now… brothers and sisters… what were we talking about again…. oh yes JESUS.

Um… can we sanctified christians be a little less positive?? Sheesh. Maybe Paul preaches as he is led… hmmmm. Maybe we just don’t listen as we’re led…. hmmmm. Love to all my brothers and sisters in the faith!

I just attended a conference where Paul Washer spoke last weekend. I just took notes, so these may not be exact, but are pretty close! He certainly has a way of saying things that is powerful! Hope you enjoy them!

“There are no great men of God. There are only weak, imperfect, fragile, broken men who are filled with the power of a great God.”

“Men and women who are used of God are men and women of prayer. They know they can not. They know He can.”

“God delights in proving His children right when they trust in Him.”

“We are strongest when we are weakest.” He spoke about how he isn’t much of a fighter, that there probably weren’t too many men in the room who couldn’t whoop him in a fight. But then he said, but there is an instance where I could easily kill the strongest three men in the room. And he described being in the ocean drowning. He said three Olympic swimmers could come to save him, but he would drown all of them if he had no hope and was drowning. The desperation and his utter hopelessness and weakness would be the source of the strength. He explained how it is the same with Christ. When we fully understand that we cannot, we have no hope, we tap into His strength. Then finished with this, “Our problem is not that we are not strong enough, our problem is that we don’t know how weak we are. Weakness is not a hindrance, it is a catalyst.”

“If God’s not taking care of us, we don’t need to be taken care of.”

“When you are truly regenerated, you are a new creature of a higher caliber. Nothing worldly can now satisfy you.”

“Those who cling to Christ with the greatest tenacity are those who recognize their weakness and also recognize His supply.”

“Set your life to do the will of God.”

“Trees don’t eat their own fruit. It is meant to feed and nourish others.”

“To make disciples, we must first be disciples. Ask yourself, what part of my life would I want exported to another person?”

He told a story about when he was a missionary in Peru. He received a call from a young man who said, Brother Paul, I want to come to serve with you in Peru. I want to give my life to missions. He asked him, young man, tell me a little about your theology. He replied, I’m not that big on theology. I just want to give my life. I want to serve. I want to come, and I will do whatever you need me to do. I just want to make a difference. He said, okay, well, can you tell me a little bit about your prayer life? He replied, well, you see, I don’t have a strong prayer life, but I want to come. I want to help. I want to give my life. Paul replied, “Young man, I’m sorry, but no one here in Peru has any need of your life. They are in deep need of the knowledge of God. It is not about sending missionaries, but about sending God’s truth through men and women of God.”

“One man, on his knees, can turn back armies and wrench scepters from kings hands. Missions is carried out on your knees.”

“You can’t look with your eyes, you have to look with your heart through the Scriptures.”

“God told us to go therefor and make disciples of all nations. If we truly grasp the enormity of this command, if we comprehend that we have been given a task to take the Gospel to the world, how can we ever be content to merely play with toys?”

“Most astounding thing we can learn is to pray as Jesus prayed. The disciples never asked him to teach them how to heal people or how to cast out demons, but they asked Him to teach them to pray. The mark of Jesus was His prayer life and relationship to the Father.”

“Our problem is not that we are to weak, but that we don’t know how weak we are. We cannot do missions apart from the Holy Spirit.”

“The end goal is not knowledge. The end goal is power. We must know and understand the Word of God, but the end goal is not knowledge. The goal is the power to live a Christian life for the Glory of God.”

“There is more missionary activity in the world today than at any other point in history, but the majority is unbiblical. Missions is a theological endeavor. We must give ourselves to missions according to the Scripture. It is not enough to give ourselves to the work. It must be carried out God’s way.”

“I have never regretted anything I have given to Jesus Christ. I have regretted everything I have kept from Him.”

“I wish we could grasp what foolishness, what deep seated ugly foolishness it is that we can see the glorious things God has done and still be so apathetic.”

“We should have a passion and zeal for Christ. That comes from correct doctrine related to the person of Jesus Christ.”

“It is often not bad things that distract me from Christ, but often it is good things that keep me from the best.”

“We don’t live and die for nothing. We are instruments to take God’s instruction to the world. Why would we trade that for anything? Live for this one thing – that His name be great among the nations.”

“Live that one thing would burn across your horizon – Hallowed be they name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done. Live that His name be supreme. Live that His kingdom might advance.”

“To be effective in missions it takes more than a love for humanity. It takes a vision for Christ and a clear understanding of what Christ wants communicated.”

“Every aspect of our life must be submitted to scripture. Not just what we say. Submit EVERY aspect of your life to Scripture.”

“Most preaching tries to take the blade off the knife. They Holy Spirit comes to convict us of our sins – to bring people to repentance. We cannot soften the Word of God. When we do, we work against the Holy Spirit.”

“Battleground of all is regeneration. Every time there is a revival, it is based on a discovery of the doctrine of regeneration. Salvation is built on the doctrine of regeneration.”

“Many pastors are consumed more with church growth than with ministering to the needs of the true Believers. There is always a small group in every congregation that is so hungry for the Word of God. On the day of judgment, God is going to ask, how could you cater to the wicked, how could you feed the goats and let my Bride starve? Carnal people are not the church. We need to share the truth in hopes of conversion, but the church needs to be feeding the Bride of Christ.”

“We need to give ourselves to the things of God. We need to see the world, see that it is dying, perishing. As a result we should spend ourselves for the glory of God and the needs of men.”

“If we truly live for the glory of God we will want healing for mankind. We will have compassion on those who are suffering.”

“Get the one thing right – our view of Christ – and it will overpower everything else.”

“Does the Gospel govern my life? To be a prisoner of the message I must know the message.”

“God made Him who knew no sin – literally means had no acquaintance with sin. There has never been one moment when we have loved God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength – there has never been a moment that Jesus didn’t. There has never been a moment when my motives were entirely pure – there was never a moment when Jesus didn’t have entirely pure motives. We love much because we have been forgiven much. Understand the depths of your depravity.”

“The more you see of Him, the more of yourself you lose and the more of a prisoner you become.”

“God saved you For Himself, From Himself, and By Himself.” (explaining the wrath of God was poured out on Jesus instead of us)

“Don’t fear them – don’t fear the Roman Army – fear the one who can kill they body and throw the soul into hell.”
“The whole charge of our sin was brought in and laid on Christ, that there may be no after reckonings with them.”

In speaking about missions, Brother Paul shared an illustration about how the person sending the missionary is just as vital as the person going. He described it as a man going down into a mine on a rope. The man going must support his full weight on his hands as he goes. He will scar his hands, he will be tired, his back will ache. He will bear scars from the difficulty of the task. However, at the other end of the rope is the one holding and supporting the rope. He also, will bear the full weight on his hands. He will scar his hands, he will be tired, his back will ache. He will bear scars from the difficulty of the task. One is not more important than the other. Both are equally important. Then he said, “The thing you see is that both will have scars. I am tired of hearing empty words. Show me your scars. Show me your scars.”
