Home Educating in Biblical Truth: A Response to Peter Enns’s “Telling God’s Story: A Parents’ Guide to Teaching the Bible” by Lea Ann Garfias
The most important subject in home education is Bible. Training our children in God’s Word is the foundation to continuing our faith (Deut. 6:4ff, Matt. 22:37ff). In this paper I will discuss at some length my perspective on teaching the Bible at home, then I will describe a biblical philosophy of teaching young children God’s Word, and finally I will show how this pertains to Peter Enns’s latest book on Bible education. Thank you for linking to this…she did a great job expressing her concerns about the way he expects parents to teach doctrine to their children. Not explaining sin to young children! Her point that the vivid lesson of a bloody Passover was intended to teach just that to children is very true. BTW, Peter Enns resigned from WTS over some concerns about his views of biblical inerrancy. I am not surprised he wrote a book that has implications that Scripture is written for “then” but may not have modern applications in many cases, a view that is becoming more insidious and allows people to weasel out of seeing it as authoritative in many areas, including women’s roles and family relationships. Not a good thing to teach children, for sure.
I think there are too much “christian authors” out there.
